On comment rot
I haven't seen this (then again I almost never go back in my IJ, so I may be an unaware victim of it), but maybe, if that LJ archive thing works for IJ, people could periodically archive their IJs to protect their comments (I did that when I surrendered LJ and I just have the archive sitting on my hard drive)? It's cumbersome, but probably better than losing millions of comments.

Thoughts? Am I a day late and a dollar short again?

They can, but first you have to decide when & how to archive. Do you do so every month? Every week? Keep each archive in case one of your posts was hit with comment rot? Check for differences and hope you didn't miss anything, and then delete the older ones?

And you can't archive your posts in communities, so comment rot in [info]pornish_pixies and [info]snarry_games can be really annoying.

Ooh. I didn't know the comms had it too (it makes sense, of course, I just didn't see anyone saying the comms had the problem). Yeah, that would be a trifle difficult to fix unless the mods archived it regularly.
I'm one of those who has plenty of room on the hard drive to archive my LJ/IJ whatever, though, so I could back it up once a month, you know, or even oftener.

I backup my journal with LJ archive and I note what day each backup was done. This way if comment rot happens between those times, I'll have my comments stored somewhere. Not to mention I save all my comment notifications via my email address so the comment rot doesn't bother me much.

See, I did that in the past (from a mailing list) - saved all my comments as email text files. I was glad to've done it once I dumped the list (I really dislike the format of lists), but it's kinda tedious and can take up a lot of memory.

comment rot doesn't bug me much...

I never really go back and re-read it, and I used to save all my notifications...but it got tedious and like I'm cleaning out meaningless things in my house, I thought I didn't really need it, it was taking up room, and you know what I can use that space for other things. So I just deleted it.

I've lost a lot of comments one way or another over the past few years I've been active in fandom, and though I was dismayed at the time, I find as time goes on I don't care so much. The good feeling of knowing people read and liked a story of mine doesn't go away just because I can't go back and egotistically wallow in the exact words of their praise. :-) (And yeah, I admit that I do that).

So yeah - in the long term, I won't cry over spilt squees.
