Okay, what am I missing?
I've heard about 4chan for a long time and heard all kinds of warnings and ooh!aah! and never bothered to look, so today I go look and ... it's just porn. Am I missing something?

	Wow. It's like the Happy Fun Ball of the Internets. Thanks for the link. I read teh Wiki article, then went to the site. I think I'd need a handfull of Ritalin to be able to focus with all that input. Overwhelming. At last they seem to use their power for good as well as evil. (Reply to this) (Parent)

4chan is (at the same time) the most wonderful and horrible place on the internet. It's a place to let out your most horrible personality traits for celebration.

Ex: They have no problem finding someone they don't like and destroying them. They found this kid online who was trying to get into gaming but he was terrible. They found his myspace, FB, all that kind of thing and then found out where he went to school. They called his school and told them he was dealing drugs. The kid got suspended for a month pending an investigation.

On the flip side: They found this pedo guy who was trolling the interwebs for underage girls. They set up a time and place for this guy and 'the girl' to meet and had the police meet him there instead.

They've also declared war on Scientology. All of these things can be found on Encyclopedia Dramatica. (google).

But yeah, 4chan is not something to just go into. Enter at your own risk.

All kinds of, um, wonderful things can be found on Encyclopedia Dramatica. As for 4chan, an acquaintance of mine who is of a techno-magical bent was once discussing interacting with the "egregores" of various sites for various exploratory/magical purposes; of 4chan he said "There are acts of bravery, and then there are acts of madness."

	Maybe it's the trolling stuff that people are alarmed about, then? I never heard that side of it, only heard it was really horrible (the hints were because of how dirty the dirty pictures were, but no one was ever explicit). (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Well, yes and no.

I have a friend who's really into /b/ and goes on the image boards (the heart of 4chan) all the time. But he knows how to navigate it and how to not incur their wrath.

I have another idiot friend who went on 4chan and randomly used it to download a program (I think file share). Me and my savvy friend were like, 'Don't do it!' but he did and it killed his computer.

Not crashed, killed.

My savvy friend just told me he was off 4chan for two weeks because they were having a virus war. Not entirely sure what that means but I'd steer clear of it too.

The image board has some truly horrible things, but I guess it depends on how sensitive you are to some images. I never troll but my friend does delight in showing me stuff.
